About
Lulu Peña is an artist and certified artisan born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico during 1981. She grew up in a very creative and talented family. From a young age she was constantly surrounded by fabric, threads, wood and diversity of flavors. This rich environment helped her grow up as a very curious and creative child. Looking back on her childhood she recalls that one of her favorite toys to play with were Lego bricks and also enjoyed doing crafts, drawing and painting. Lulu began to notice that she had the ability to visualize objects in a different way when in standardized tests at school, she could resolve quickly and with higher scores the spatial reasoning sections.
Her first formal drawing and painting class was with Prof. Rafael Rivera Ortiz and her first encounter with clay was in 2004 in a hand-built course with Puerto Rican ceramic master, Prof. Manuel Pagán at the University of Puerto Rico. After finishing her studies in Psychology at the University of Puerto Rico and later studying Design at the San Juan School of Interior Design, Lulu rediscovered her passion for art in painting workshops with Puerto Rican renowned artist Diana Dávila. From that moment on, Diana Dávila became her mentor and was responsible for reconnecting her with the magical medium of clay. “At that moment everything made sense”.
Lulu continued to take ceramic classes and educating herself with the goal and dream of becoming a professional artist. She has taken courses with other renowned ceramicists and potters such as, Toni Hambleton, Cristina Córdova, Del Harrow and Courtney Martin.
